Every last Sunday of the month the big Punta Arenas-Puerto Williams ferry goes to Puerto Toro (1-2-3) That beach (6)  lies within a 40 minute walk from the village. Low tide opens a passage to the island, usually hidden by the sea.

We started walking  just after the boat had let us off (2), crossed the peat bog (4) running, came to a huge beaver pond (5), crossed the woods, then ran along the beach (6), and made it: the low tide was scheduled to 11:20 which gave us just enough time to get to the island and back.

My companion, young David Santibañez, the captain´s apprentice, took the photos for this collage
